The VOCM News team has been recognized by the Atlantic Journalism Awards in the best radio newscast and breaking news categories.
Hosted by award-winning journalist Brian Madore, the January 22, 2020, edition of VOCM News at Noon earned a gold award for excellence in a regularly scheduled radio newscast.
The half-hour program delivered a comprehensive news package as eastern Newfoundland worked to reopen in the aftermath of Snowmageddon. St. John’s was in its sixth day under a State of Emergency.
VOCM’s Greg Smith takes home a silver award for breaking news—also in relation to Snowmageddon. He spoke with then-premier Dwight Ball live on air, breaking the news that the province had decided to call in the Canadian Army Reservists to help people dig out of their homes following the storm of the century.
A skeleton crew of eight VOCM staff were stranded at the station for over 50 hours, as they worked to keep the province up to date on the latest news.
