Central Health is confirming that there has been a positive COVID-19 case associated with St. Paul’s Intermediate school in Gander.
St. Paul’s Intermediate says the school is closed today for what they call operational reasons.
Public Health says contact tracing is underway. Reginal Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Monika Dutt says the health authority is working with the school administration to determine those who may be at risk.
Meanwhile, parents on the west coast are raising concerns about schools continuing to stay open, while investigations are ongoing into the Stephenville-St. George’s-Port au Port area cluster.
More than 2,000 tests have been completed and all people who have been recently identified as a positive case have been the contact of a previous case, however, the initial source remains under investigation.
The school district has released a memo stating that all schools in Stephenville are open for regular classes with the expectation that all students be in attendance.
The NLESD says that all individuals in the western region recently diagnosed have been contacted and although families are understandably concerned, there is no impact on normal safe operations of the school.
That isn’t sitting well with west coast parent, Keith Muise.
He says schools in Central were deemed safe to reopen, despite an alert yesterday that a case was linked to a school in that region. He questions if a similar situation could happen on the west coast as both regions are still looking for the source of infections in the respective clusters.
