The downtown Pedestrian Mall is only a few short weeks away, and business owners are working quickly to get their patios prepped.
St. John’s Councillor Debbie Hanlon says there is excitement in the air with a lot of community spirit in the downtown right now. She equates it to being like Santa’s workshop without the snow.
More than 80 parklets have been approved around the entire city. Hanlon says it’s great to see so many businesses taking advantage of the program and notes more business expanding their operations outdoors is a win for everyone.
She says it’s good for residents, business owners, and tourism as restaurants are not the only businesses setting up parklets. Hanlon says you can feel the anticipation of summer.
The deadline for applications for parklets in the Pedestrian Mall has ended. However, businesses outside the mall can still apply until the program ends.
Hanlon says the Pedestrian Mall will include musical and theatrical performances, more decorations, giveaways, demonstrations, and interactive games during the weekends on Water Street, Duckworth Street, and George Street to get people engaged.
The city is also working on a parking and transportation map to address parking concerns. Hanlon says it will be shared on social media, and include information on where to find free, paid, and accessible parking options, parking garages, and other public transportation information.
Construction on Water Street is ongoing, but Hanlon says it will be finished by the end of the month, just in time for the opening of the Pedestrian Mall on July 2.
