SEA-NL, an advocacy group for licensed commercial owner-operators in the province, is raising concerns about the province’s fish price-setting panel.
Ryan Cleary of SEA-NL says one of the big complaints he hears from the panel is that they don’t have the best information available to make decisions.
He uses the price of crab as an example, explaining that since the price of crab was set at $7.60 back in April, prices have “gone through the roof.” He calls it an example of how harvesters are not getting the best possible price for their product.
Cleary says there are a lot of “weaknesses” with the price-setting panel, and thinks a better system should be in place.
He suggests looking at alternative systems such as one where auctioning was looked at in the 1990s.
