The host of VOCM’s Cabin Party and the Honorary Ride Captain of Ride for Dad is detailing his battle with prostate cancer in support of the “Plaid for Dad” campaign.
The Canadian Cancer Society campaign encourages Canadians to wear plaid for prostate cancer awareness.
Brian O’Connell, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014, has been undergoing treatment ever since. O’Connell stresses the importance of the work that the Cancer Society and Prostate Cancer NL do.
He says one of every nine men in this country will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of death for men in the country. He says the research funded by events like Plaid for Dad has made a big difference in advancing treatment.

O’Connell also addressed the physical exam involved in prostate cancer detection. He says that while men don’t like to talk about the exam, it’s an important part of early detection.
If there is prostate cancer in your family history, you should talk to your doctor and get a physical exam as early detection is the key.
