A non-profit organization in Petty Harbour is defending the construction of a fence in an area where locals say they have enjoyed access for time immemorial.
A petition against the fence has been launched.
Many of their guests are young children and other vulnerable people, or are members of partner non-profits—including the Association for New Canadians and Choices for Youth. They also have to protect the property for material purposes as many items are stored outside the building.
The organization says there have been instances where adults not participating in any programs have refused to leave the property, even when asked, and have insisted on fly fishing. The area has been accessed at night without permission and garbage has been left behind. When the snow falls, snowmobile tracks are found across the tops of picnic tables and wooden dories.
Fishing for Success teaches children to fish and provides group programming through revenue generated by tourism events.
