A meeting is planned for this morning to discuss concerns residents have with a recent algal bloom in Forest Pond near Salmon Cove.
Eric Penney, a concerned resident, is meeting with MHA Steve Crocker and MP Churence Rogers at the Salmon Cove town council office this morning.
He says residents have been watching the problem develop over the last few years and this year has been the worst to date, with many fish — including salmon — dying.
Water samples have been taken by provincial and federal officials for testing — but so far no information has been released on what nutrients are feeding the green algae.
Forest Pond and Salmon Cove are downstream from the town of Victoria and its sewage treatment plant.
The problem is even affecting Salmon Cove’s main attraction, Salmon Cove Sands. The town has issued a warning asking people not to enter the water in or around the town, including at the beach.
Penney says area residents are running out of patience and they want someone to take ownership and be accountable for what’s happening. “People are asking a lot of questions,” says Penney, including why it’s happening, what’s causing, whether anyone can be held accountable, and whether it can be prevented from happening again.
