A St. John’s School is being recognized for its commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for students with intellectual disabilities.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Association for Community Living and the Department of Education presented the Inclusive Education Award to East Point Elementary.
The school has a number of initiatives to show appreciation for the diversity of the school community and celebrate different cultures. Students are encouraged to share their cultures and are given the opportunity to speak their own language during important occasions.
The principal makes daily announcements via video to give more access to students, and daily newsletters are sent out in both English and Arabic to parents and guardians.
East Point also promotes ASL within the classroom — for Pink Shirt Day students wore shirts with “Be Kind” written in ASL.
The Association for Community Living says inclusive schools build inclusive communities, and they are proud to honour the school for creating such an inclusive school community.
We are so honoured and proud to have been presented with this award. We are thrilled that the ASL Immersion program is part of our EPE family and thank them for the beautiful nomination 🤟❤️ @NLACL @EDU_GovNL @NLESDCA @DhhTeam @AlmaMcniven @lake_georgina @nlesdceo @LeoEtchegary pic.twitter.com/be0no4mlku
