Residents in the district of Cape St. Francis are grieving and in shock following a two-vehicle crash in Pouch Cove that claimed one life and sent others to hospital late Saturday night.
Holy Trinity High School in Torbay is opening its doors today for crisis intervention and grief counselling following the death of former student Travis Wheaton.
Two cars collided on the main highway just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning, leaving a man dead and several other people injured. The RNC, Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department, and paramedics rushed to the scene, closing the highway for several hours. The two vehicles were not removed until just after daybreak.
Neighbours in the area say one vehicle landed in the ditch on its roof while the other remained upright and on the road but in a perpendicular position. They also say that four females were in one vehicle.
The orange police markings on the shoulder are easily visible. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of highway, not far from the serene setting of Shoe Cove Pond, a picnic park.
Staff and administration of Holy Trinity say it will be open to students today from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to help the school community deal with the tragedy. Guidance and crisis intervention services will be available for those who need them. Any student wishing to go to the school either individually or as a group is welcome.
