Two high-profile murder cases were back before the courts this morning in St. John’s.
First up was Kurt Churchill who appeared in provincial court on the phone from the penitentiary.
The 44-year-old has been in custody since his arrest in Toronto last week in connection with the death of 47-year-old Jamie Cody.

Last week, police said the arrest should give residents of that neighbourhood some relief, but that could be short-lived. Churchill’s lawyer said today that his client is very eager to apply for bail as his case works its way through the courts.
The matter will be called again next week for a status update. No date has been set for the bail hearing which has to happen in Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the sentencing hearing for Steven Bragg was also called this morning but was postponed until September. That’s to provide more time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
Bragg has been convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Victoria Head in 2017.
He remains in custody at HMP pending sentencing for the crime, which carries a minimum of life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.
