The Town of Twillingate is exploring disaster relief options for a number of local business owners who lost everything in a devastating fire last week.
Chief Administrative Officer with the town, Jonathan Galgay is commending the efforts of the Twillingate and Summerford volunteer fire departments for their coordinated efforts in averting an even greater disaster.
“They literally saved a significant portion of the town,” says Galgay. The magnitude of the fire was significant for a volunteer fire department anywhere in the province, he says, and their coordinated efforts helped to protect and save surrounding properties.
In the meantime, the town is in conversation with MHA Derek Bennett to evaluate what programs might be available for those affected by the fire.
He says a lot of people are out of work because of the disaster, and efforts are underway to try to locate available space in or around the community to allow some of the affected businesses to resume operations.
