The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is providing updates on two endangered North Atlantic right whales entangled in gear off New Brunswick.
The whales, both spotted near Miscou Island at the mouth of the Baie de Chaleur, are the first reported in Canadian waters since 2019.
The New England Aquarium has identified one whale as EG#4615, a five-year-old male. The crew aboard a New England Aquarium research vessel which is working in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, reports that the whale appears to be badly injured. A satellite tag was attached to the gear and DFO is tracking the animal.
Meanwhile, officials are tracking Snow Cone, another North Atlantic right whale reported entangled in gear near Miscou Island.
The Campobello Whale Rescue Team was able to remove additional rope from the animal last week and while some rope remains, the whale appears to be in good condition and appears to be feeding. DFO is continuing to track the whale and if weather and sea conditions allow, efforts will be made to try to remove the remaining gear.
