The transportation minister is defending the closure of a major section of the Trans-Canada Highway this weekend for road work.
Elvis Loveless says there’s never a good time to shut down any section of a major thoroughfare like the TCH, adding the inconvenience is regrettable.
However, he says he’s been informed there’s less traffic on the weekend than weekdays, adding time is money and the contractor, Weir’s Construction has to get the project completed.
As of 5 p.m., the TCH will be closed in both directions between the Holyrood and Foxtrap Access Roads, which has triggered a flurry of complaints from the public.
Advisories have indicated the closure is necessary for culvert replacements, with a government Tweet stating the timing will ensure the work is done as quickly and safely as possible, day and night, over the weekend.
All four lanes will be closed, so eastbound drivers will have to divert at Salmonier Line (Route 90), Holyrood Access Road (Route 62) and Witless Bay Line (Route 13). Westbound traffic can detour at Foxtrap Access Road (Route 13) and Witless Bay Line (Route 13).
People going to Butter Pot Park will be allowed beyond the detour from the eastbound lanes.
The highway is expected to reopen on Monday, but drivers are advised to expect delays in the area throughout the weekend.
