The President of Memorial University hopes there will be no decrease in enrollment at MUN when proposed tuition increases come into effect.
Vianne Timmons has said a tuition increase could decrease enrollment by 20 percent. However, she says that number was created for a financial modeling exercise to see what the worst-case scenario could be.
Recruitment and retention is the university’s number one priority over the next 12 months, says Timmons. She says if enrollment does drop, she believes it will be short-term.
Timmons says the university’s tuition is still the most affordable in Atlantic Canada. She says now it’s time to shift the focus to the quality of education at MUN.
She doesn’t want the university to be known as cheap, she wants MUN to be known as one of the most internationally renowned universities. Timmons says it will be a new narrative, but one that speaks to the quality of Memorial and how it benefits the province, and the workforce across the country.
