A serial rapist serving a life sentence for violent attacks against sex workers in the early 1990s in downtown St. John’s, has died in a New Brunswick prison.
Garrett Young was 36 when he was convicted on 15 counts involving seven victims.
The offences included sexual assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm, use of a weapon during a sexual assault, assault causing bodily harm, kidnapping, and theft with violence.
Despite the multiple, severe attacks, Young had no prior criminal record.
The Crown attempted to have him declared a dangerous offender but that was dismissed, with the province’s Supreme Court saying expert evidence convinced them Young could control his sexual urges in the future.
In the end, however, the application proved unnecessary.
In a statement yesterday afternoon, Dorchester Penitentiary confirmed Young died Tuesday of apparent natural causes while in custody.
They noted at the time of his death he was still serving the life sentence imposed almost 27 years ago.
As with all inmate deaths, the Correctional Service Canada will investigate along with police and the coroner.
Young was in his mid-60s.
The prison said his next of kin have been notified.
