The 203rd Royal St. John’s Regatta is a go today.
It was not a hard decision for the Royal St. John’s Regatta Committee, who had to postpone the races yesterday due to high winds.
Course Captain Noelle Thomas-Kennell gave the Metrobus Go/No Go call shortly after 5:30 a.m. this morning. She says it was a unanimous decision.
Thomas-Kennell says the weather is much better today, with sustained winds around 20 km/h throughout the day with gusts at a high of 40 km/h.
Races will get underway at 8 a.m., beginning with two senior male races followed by two senior female races. There are 17 races, and 63 crews in this year’s Regatta.
Thomas-Kennell says the last scheduled race will start at 4 p.m. then there will be a break to prepare for the championship races. The male championship race begins at 6:30 p.m. and for the first time ever the female championship will close out the day.
Thomas-Kennell says this is a historic day, and she is proud to be the one to implement this change on the schedule. This decision was voted on in 2019, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first female championship race. As a new policy, the Regatta will rotate between the male and female championships as the last race.
She is reminding the public of the COVID-19 measures in place at the races, she says anyone not directly involved with the Regatta should enjoy them from home. Race results can be found at the Royal St. John’s Regatta’s website.
