It appears as though the Teal Turtle may have been retrieved from an island just off Burgeo.
A call to the VOCM Newsroom this morning indicates that the little vessel is nowhere to be seen on Flat Island where it reportedly landed sometime on Friday or Saturday.
The Teal Turtle is the sister ship of the HK Pride a similar 5-foot unmanned sailboat which ran aground at Bushy Bay near McCallum in July.
The two vessels were launched into the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras in May but instead of crossing the Atlantic, the two little vessels were knocked off their expected course and sent northward by the remnants of Hurricane Elsa.
Emily Bryant of the USS Constitution Museum, which helped the students of Harvard-Kent Elementary School with the project, says now they’re looking for a little help recovering the Teal Turtle if it’s safe to do so.
The HK Pride meanwhile, is safely stored away at the DFO office in Harbour Breton awaiting the start of the school year.
Bryant says they hope to involve the local elementary and high school in a virtual connection with the students of Harvard-Kent.
A similar event will be planned in the school year with students in the Burgeo area with the hope that the two vessels can be relaunched from Newfoundland for a journey across the Atlantic.
🚨 Landfall!
Teal Turtle couldn't let HK Pride have all the fun in Newfoundland. She landed on Flat Island, south of Burgeo, 80 miles from where HK Pride landed two weeks ago. Our new friends in the area are helping us recover her & reunite the miniboats! ⛵️ ⛵️
