The NLESD is issuing a call for tenders to install air purification and filtration systems in every classroom in the province.
The intent is to secure enough HEPA filtration systems to provide one for each classroom across the province. This will increase the quality of the air in classrooms and remove potential allergens or airborne viruses, such as COVID-19.
While the Minister of Education, Tom Osborne, is not able to disclose the price until the tenders come back, it is expected to cost several million dollars.
With students fully returning to in-person classes, the hope is that schools will become less of a breeding ground for viruses. Osborne says purifying the air will hopefully lead to fewer students and teachers requiring sick days and slow the spread of COVID-19.
Osborne says they are trying to get the systems in place as close to the start of the school year as possible. The tenders are set to close August 20.
