The Better Business Bureau is warning the public of yet another scam, but this time, involving fraudulent QR codes, which have become increasingly popular amid the COVID-19 pandemic on things like restaurant menus to allow customers to view it by scanning the code with their phone.
It’s a quick and easy way for people to get information quickly.
The fraudulent scam can work in several ways: One can receive an email, a media direct message on social media, a text message, a flyer or a piece of mail that just includes a QR code.
Kristin Matthews, marketing and communications specialist with the Better Business Bureau, says sometimes the scam code will lead you to a phishing site.
Other times con artists will use QR codes to automatically launch a payment app or follow a malicious social media account says Matthews. Such scams can follow many twists and turns.
