A video of what appears to be a large leatherback turtle off the province’s coast is making waves online.
The video, shared by Jeff Elliott, shows the turtle swimming off St. Anthony and has been viewed roughly 40,000 times.
He describes the turtle as “massive,” noting that it’s the first time he’s ever seen one. Elliott and another man on the boat can be heard commenting on the turtle’s size.
A large mark can be seen on the reptile’s head, leading Elliott to wonder if it had been injured.
Leatherback turtles are the largest turtle species in the world and can weigh up to 1,500 pounds.
