The Town of Gander has two days of events planned to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and the day the world came to town.
Thirty-four commercial jets, four military planes and about 6,000 passengers and crew were redirected to Gander after a ground stop was ordered for all aircraft in North American airspace.
Within hours the town’s population grew by almost 70 per cent, and stayed that way for five days as Gander and surrounding towns accommodated those left stranded.
Events on the upcoming anniversary will include the dedication of a new 9/11 monument, a related art unveiling and book launch, as well as an “untold stories” event and commemoration service.
