It’s a rough weekend in the sporting world in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Robin Short, the long-time Sports Editor of The Telegram, has passed away after a two-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family when he passed.
We are heartbroken to share the news that Robin Short passed away at home with his family by his side following complications resulting from Glioblastoma.
He was a Dad, Son, loving husband, loyal friend, and mentor.

Short will be remembered for his accomplishments, but also as a kind character who lived for the crack of the bat. He was as knowledgeable about sports as anyone in the province, often-times being the only local sports journalist at memorable events such as the Olympic gold medal for Canada, represented by the Brad Gushue Rink, in men’s curling in Italy, and the “Golden Goal” in Vancouver.
Short broke many big stories, including the possibility of the Winnipeg Jets operating an AHL team in St. John’s, which ended up being the IceCaps.
Robin Short brought major-league coverage of the AHL to St. John’s for more than two decades. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time. https://t.co/2fNRevKMNa

His weekly column in The Telegram sometimes hit hard and often riled as much as entertained the sporting community.
His career spanned the five decades since the 1980s, long before the advent of social media.
We at VOCM would sometimes go to Short for insight into sports stories, his last appearance being on On Target with Linda Swain when he, Don Power, and Brian Madore fielded questions about the Stanley Cup playoffs, specifically the Montreal Canadiens’ run to the final.
