The Innu Nation has released a questionnaire to federal election candidates on the Muskrat Falls rate mitigation plan outlined by the federal government over the summer.
The Innu Nation, Mushuau Innu, and Sheshatshiu Innu First Nations are calling on all parties and candidates to commit to pursuing the recommendations of a recently released report by the Canadian Human Rights Commission on the matter of Muskrat Falls and rate mitigation.
The recommendations include finalizing a modern treaty with the Innu Nation in three years. They’re also asking candidates to oppose signing a final agreement on Muskrat Falls rate mitigation until the Innu Nation’s concerns are addressed.
The Innu Nation has launched a court challenge of the deal announced over the summer.
The list of questions for candidates includes whether they support for the Innu Nation’s position, whether they will insist that the Innu Nation be provided with detailed financial models used to reach the rate mitigation deal to ensure the benefits they were promised under the Muskrat Falls IBA are protected, and whether they will insist that the Innu are given “their rightful place at the negotiation table” before any agreement is finalized.
