A local bird rescue group suddenly has a lot of mouths to feed thanks to Hurricane Larry.
The Rock Wildlife Rescue takes in small wildlife, including birds, and nurses injured animals back to health before releasing them back into the wild.
Hurricane Larry was especially hard on birds, some species of which are still nesting this time of year.
Karen Brown-Gosse says sometimes strong winds will knock nests out of trees. In many cases, the solution is as simple as putting the nest back in the tree, but after Larry barreled through, the tree may no longer exist. That means she’s feeding a few nests full of orphaned birds.
They now have four nests of chicks – two finches and two warblers. Brown-Gosse says while leaving the chicks with their mother is the ideal situation, the birds they have will need to be kept and fed until they fledge.
They’re also caring for an injured whimbrel (a type of shorebird) and numerous storm petrels which become helpless when on land. She’s asking anyone who finds a storm petrel to keep it in a safe place until it can safely be released over the water after dark.
Anyone who finds an orphaned or injured bird can reach out to The Rock Wildlife Rescue or CPAWS.
