The First Nations Major Projects Coalition and Maiwpukek First Nation are gearing up to work together towards increased equity participation in the LNG Newfoundland and Labrador Limited project, representing the first ever First Nations equity participation in an offshore energy project in the province.
The equity participation agreement will provide contracts and long-term jobs for the Miawpukek community, according to a news release issued yesterday.
Shayne McDonald, an Indigenous lawyer on the Miawpukek Reserve, says the partnership allows for a brighter future for his community.
He says it is a significant opportunity for the community to continue to close the gap, generating jobs for the community. The project aligns with their community values.
The signing ceremony took place at the Noia conference yesterday at the St. John’s Convention Centre.
