Alison Coffin may have stepped down as NDP leader yesterday, but the party hopes to see her back in the House of Assembly in the not-too-distant future.
Coffin submitted her resignation Monday after almost 60 per cent of delegates voted for a leadership review at the party’s weekend convention.
Yesterday, she met with media to make her decision public.
She said after reflecting over the past couple of days, and to ensure the incoming executive can focus on the task before them, she made the decision to step down.
Coffin declined to answer reporters’ questions, instead deferring to party president Kyle Rees.
Rees noted the party’s court challenge of Coffin’s loss in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi is coming up in the new year.
Rees says he’s optimistic the NDP will win that case, and that Coffin will run again in the resulting byelection.
St. John’s Centre MHA Jim Dinn, who also declined to take questions yesterday, will step in as interim leader.
Rees says the party will wait at least until next year before embarking on a change of leadership.
