The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s says the Basilica of St. John The Baptist is part of its review of assets toward settling sex abuse claims from residents of Mount Cashel Orphanage in the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s.
Archbishop Peter Hundt provided an update on the process today in a letter to parishioners and the media.
He says they are aware of approximately 130 victim claims. However, he acknowledges more may come forward so the final value of the claims is not yet known.
Hundt says the Church continues to assess the value and sustainability of all buildings and property, including the Basilica, but adds the process won’t be completed until early next year.
He says the review includes a complete review of how the Church operates in the province, adding the work is still “far from complete.”
