The province is set to begin debate on new accessibility legislation.
The purpose of the proposed “enabling” legislation is to identify, prevent, and remove barriers faced by people with disabilities.
Those barriers include things like architecture, information and communication, attitudes, and technology.
Currently, five provinces and the federal government have such legislation.
The bill, if approved, will authorize the establishment of accessibility standards, require those subject to the standards to identify, prevent, and remove those barriers, establish an Accessibility Standards Advisory Board, require public bodies to prepare accessibility plans, and provide inspection and enforcement powers.
If passed, the legislation will come into effect on December 3rd.
