The provincial government is bringing in a professional code of conduct for municipalities across the province.
The move comes following an extensive consultation process, during which professional behaviour was identified as an area of concern.
The new legislation will govern conflict of interest, ethical behaviour and professional conduct.
It will require that all municipalities adopt a code of conduct, which will apply to anyone acting on their behalf, such as councillors, staff, and volunteers.
The code set out by government includes the minimum requirements, which towns and cities can build upon if they wish.
All municipalities will be required to provide mandatory training for everyone the code applies to.
If training is not completed, then the duties of that person cannot be carried out.
Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs Krista Lynn Howell says they are working to get the legislation implemented as quickly as possible.
She says they’re looking at about nine months: Six months to get the proper training in place, and a three month period for councils to get everyone up to speed.
