Over 100 refugees from Afghanistan arrived in the province earlier this week, and the Association for New Canadians has been busy working to set them up in their new homes.
Executive Director Megan Morris says the Association has been preparing for the refugees’ arrival for a number of weeks.
All 116 people are quarantining in a hotel in St. John’s for the time being.
According to Morris, they are working to set the newcomers up with housing, school, work, and other supports that may be needed.
Inside the St. Pius X Parish Hall, the Association has numerous tables set up to organize donations of clothes, dishes, toys, and other items.
According to Morris, there are things the general public can do to help out.
She says financial donations, donations of clothing items such as winter coats would be a big help. As well, they are in need of some volunteers to help out too.
