A local man with a wealth of experience adopting difficult dogs is making a significant contribution to a new SPCA campaign.
The Way Home campaign is hoping to raise $5 million dollars to build a new SPCA building in St. John’s, to replace the organizations current undersized facility.
Campaign Chair Jim Hynes and his brother Barry Hynes started off the campaign by contributing $100,000 to the cause. Hynes says it was important to support the cause.

He says the animals enter the SPCA with uncertain futures, and leave with new homes. He says its important for both the animals and the community, as adopted pets help people with mental health issues, PTSD, and those who are lonely.
Hynes has adopted many dogs labelled as “difficult” including retired police dogs. Police Dog Edge, who passed away last week, entered Hynes’ care after retirement. Hynes shared his experience with Edge.
Hynes says it can be a challenging, but rewarding, experience. He says Edge showed up as a big, mean police dog, and after a few days, Edge was comforting him when he didn’t feel good. He says by the end, Edge was 95 percent dog, and 5 percent police dog.
