The final report from the Inquiry into Ground Search and Rescue has been released to the public.
The inquiry examined the organization and operations of the ground search and rescue system in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The inquiry stemmed from a government commitment made years ago following the tragic passing of 14-year-old Burton Winters in February of 2012.
The child passed away after walking 19 km across the sea ice off the coast of Makkovik after he had to abandon his snowmobile.
Some of the key recommendations stemming from the inquiry’s final report include increased use of the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association spotters, mental health training for police agencies and search and rescue teams, funding and insurance benefits to support the NL Search and Rescue Association and ensuring that gaps in contracted air assets are addressed.
Opposition Leader David Brazil is calling on government to enact the recommendations as soon as possible.
Minister of Justice and Public Safety, John Hogan says the province will work with the federal government in determining under whose jurisdiction some of the recommendations fall.
