The Newfoundland Pony Society is hosting its Annual General Meeting in St. John’s tomorrow.
The group is the official organization responsible for the preservation and protection of the registered heritage breed.
The pony, developed from a variety of West Country and Irish breeds brought over during the migratory fishery, adapted well to the rugged Newfoundland landscape.
Tammy Webber owns Newfoundland ponies and is with a group known as Pony Pals which helps to rehome ponies.
She says the animals have a number of basic needs to survive and thrive.
She says there is a need for pastures to keep ponies, including access to a farrier and vet.
The Newfoundland Pony Society is raising funds for the development of a Newfoundland Pony Park in Hopeall, Trinity Bay to help keep and possibly breed ponies, as well as showcase the work they’ve done in helping people survive in a difficult climate.
The AGM takes place tomorrow at 1:00 at the Airport Comfort Hotel.
