The Town of Spaniard’s Bay has agreed to install community mailboxes, but not many in the town are pleased.
Following the closure of the local retailer, the town was left without postal service, forcing residents to travel to Harbour Grace for their mail.
Now, after efforts to find another entrepreneur partner came back fruitless, the town has agreed to install community mailboxes.
However, Mayor Paul Brazil says council didn’t have much choice but to agree to the deal.
He says they approached Canada Post about setting up a full postal outlet that Canada Post would operate themselves, but that wasn’t on the table.
He calls the mailboxes a “downgrade in service”.
He says Canada Post has a nation-wide policy that doesn’t allow them to open up new post offices in “communities in decline”, but having another business take over was not financially viable due to Canada Post’s business model.
He says residents are disappointed.
He says council feels just as strongly as the residents that they’ve been abandoned by Canada Post, but they had to make the best of the situation they could.
