The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s has formally filed for creditor protection.
In a release issued Tuesday, Archbishop Peter Hundt says since the legal decision became final that the Archiocese was vicariously liable for claims of abuse at the Mount Cashel Orphanage dating to the 40s, 50s and 60s, they have been working to determine how best to resolve the claims while also ensuring the ongoing practice of their faith.
The Archiodese has filed for creditor protection as the next step in the process of resolving those claims. The Archdiocese will request additional time to complete the evaluation of assets, and develop a creditor proposal to settle victims’ claims and creditor liabilities.
That means certain properties, including church buildings, will be marketed to satisfy those claims.
Archbishop Hundt intends to meet with as many parishes and groups as he can in the coming weeks to explain the situation and respond to questions and concerns.
