The City of St. John’s is urging residents to avoid feeding wild birds in response to a recent outbreak of avian flu.
Last week, federal officials confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic flu at an “exhibition farm” on the Avalon Peninsula. They did not identify the farm.
In response to recent testing, Environment Canada has now confirmed the presence of the avian flu in wild birds in the St. John’s area, including Bowring Park, Quidi Vidi Lake and other areas frequented by flocks of birds.
As a result, the public are asked to refrain from feeding, touching or handling wild birds including ducks, pigeons and gulls.
Meanwhile, federal and provincial officials say they’re working the owner of the farm to manage the situation.
