One of the province’s best known and most colourful former politicians has passed away.
John Efford was just days shy of his 78th birthday which falls on January 6th.
Efford, a successful businessman, was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1985 in the district of Port de Grave and was a vocal member of the Liberal Opposition. He joined the government side after the Liberals swept to victory under Premier Clyde Wells in 1989, and served in a number of provincial portfolios including fisheries.
Efford ran for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 2001 in what turned out to be a fractious three-way race eventually won by Roger Grimes by just 14 votes. Efford then dropped out of provincial politics indicating that he could not work with Grimes.
In 2002 he was elected to the House of Commons in a by-election and served in the federal Liberal government for the next three years, serving for a time as federal fisheries minister, when poor health forced him to retire.
Efford was known for his outspoken manner, something that gained him great respect, especially among his loyal supporters. The Shearstown Brass Band often accompanied him at political rallies and other public events adding to his larger-than-life personality.
Efford is survived by his wife Madonna, three children and three grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at a later date due to COVID restrictions.
Statement From the Family
With profound sadness and heartache, Madonna Efford and her daughter Jackie, sons John Jr. and Lee announce the peaceful passing of a beloved husband and father today in Carbonear hospital.
“Dad was surrounded by his family and died peacefully in his sleep,” said Jackie. “We loved him beyond measure, and we will miss him terribly.”
She added: “Dad was a proud and passionate Newfoundlander who deeply loved this province and its people… he always wore his heart on his sleeve. His many years of public service and commitment to making a difference in the lives of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians was second to none. This is a sad day for us and for all of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
The family respectfully asks for privacy at this time.
Due to Covid restrictions, a celebration of life for the Honourable R. John Efford will be held at a later date.
