With Team Gushue set to return to the Olympics in the new year, many tongue-in-cheek inquiries have arisen about the completion of the Team Gushue Highway.
Construction of the highway, named for the 2006 Men’s gold medal winning team skipped by Brad Gushue, has laid dormant for years, with traffic being funnelled into residential streets in Mount Pearl, which were not designed to handle the heavy traffic flow.
Mount Pearl Mayor Dave Aker says he’s met with Transportation Minister Elvis Loveless for solutions to improve access to help mitigate the traffic being offloaded into Mount Pearl.
He says, generally speaking, Park Avenue and Smallwood Drive, the streets affected the most, weren’t built for that much traffic, while Commonwealth Avenue and Topsail Road can handle it.
He says the city would like to see traffic redirected to those roads, rather than the residential streets.
