The City of Corner Brook has extended the deadline for public feedback on its Integrated Municipal Sustainability Plan to Friday.
The four key challenges identified for Corner Brook over the next ten years are climate change, urban sprawl and housing choices, aging infrastructure, and demographic and economic uncertainty.
The city says while new developments on the outskirts of the city may provide additional property tax revenue, it also represents greater cost in terms of infrastructure and maintenance. The city says it may be beneficial to focus on building “up” rather than “out.”
The city currently manages some 175 km of drinking water pipes, 105 km of storm sewer infrastructure, 137 km of sewer lines, 146 km of streets and 52 km of sidewalks, many of which are aging.
The city is hopeful that land-use planning can create conditions to help attract new residents and generate viable economic growth.
