Premier Andrew Furey says doctors just want to be doctors, and government is working on making that happen.
Furey says it’s part of the massive paradigm shift that’s necessary, and within the mandate of Health Accord NL.
Part of that mandate includes re-inventing how, when and where doctors work, while eliminating the burden of the business side of things.
He says all doctors express a desire to just concentrate on what they went to school for, instead of looking after the day-to-day business of staffing and overhead.
The province announced last week that a tentative deal had been reached with the NLMA.
The agreement has yet to be ratified by doctors.
This week, government announced greater efforts to focus on the recruitment and retention of doctors and other health professionals, including a new position within the Department of Health, and a new office to deal with health care recruitment.
In the short term, Furey says the government has offered doctors better incentives to stay and practice in the province.
