A growing amount of scientific evidence shows a link between alcohol consumption and cancer in humans – leading to calls for warning labels on bottles, similar to those on cigarette packages.
The British medical journal Lancet published the results of the global study, showing that more than 740,000 new cases of cancer reported in 2020 were attributable to alcohol consumption.
Alcohol has been linked to a significant percentage of a variety of cancers according to Memorial University professor, Dr. Mike Wahl.
The study showed 24 per cent of breast cancer cases, 20 per cent of colon cancer cases, 15 per cent of rectal cancers, and 13 per cent of oral and liver cancers were linked to alcohol.
According to researchers, the findings highlight the need for effective policy and interventions, along with increased awareness of the risks associated with alcohol use.
Wahl says greater awareness is a good idea.
He doesn’t see anything wrong with increasing awareness and preventing people from getting sick, or hurt.
