The presence of avian flu on the Avalon Peninsula has backyard farmers worried.
Steve and Lisa McBride have a farming operating on the Southern Shore and are the administrators of the hugely popular Backyard Farming and Homesteading Facebook page.
In terms of his own flocks, McBride already has biosecurity measures in place because of the honeybees they keep, which can be very sensitive to certain viruses and pathogens.
In the meantime, he’s been fielding plenty of questions from people who keep small flocks of chickens or ducks.
He has been advising people to restrict and temporarily discontinue the sale or trade of any domestic poultry to contain the spread.
