A local promoter is recalling the time he brought Meat Loaf to St. John’s.
David Carver, along with CPI and Donald K. Donald, hosted Summer Blast ’93 on the shores of Quidi Vidi Lake in August of that year.
Meat Loaf was one of a half dozen bands on the bill, which included headliners Def Leppard.
Carver says while Def Leppard took a pass on the Screech-In, Meat Loaf milked it for all it was worth.
He recalls the crowd chanting, “kiss the cod, kiss the cod!” prompting Meat Loaf to lift the huge codfish over his head, smashing it into his face for a kiss with the crowd roaring its approval.
Meat Loaf died Friday at the age of 74 with family and friends by his side.
Carver says there’s no question he appreciated the St. John’s crowd as much as they appreciated him.
