Calls have been made for changes to the K-12 social studies curriculum after photos of what some view as a racist assignment surfaced on social media, but according to the Anti-Racism Coalition this isn’t the first time such concerns have been raised.
The assignment in question is called “How Many Immigrants Should Canada Take?”
Sobia Shaikh of ARC-NL explains the book that contains the assignment has been used in the province’s schools for about a decade.
Shaikh says the coalition is very concerned about the material because it can expose kids to what she calls “curricular violence.”
She points to another example in the province during which students were asked to read out passages from an “outdated” book in which a racial slur was used.
After that lesson, which she says involved in book written in 1977 about the underground railroad, bullying about the student’s racial features got worse. She says this isn’t the first time they’ve heard concerns about the K-12 social studies curriculum.
