A rally is planned in Lewisporte to protest against a proposed waste-to-energy project for the area.
Synergy World Power, also known as EnviroPower, made previous unsuccessful attempts to introduce its liquefaction technology in Scotland, the US and the Caribbean.
The company is now trying to bring forward a similar proposal in this province whereby both biomass and plastic waste would be brought in, and converted to liquid fuel.
The proposal, under the name EnviroPower Renewable Development Incorporated, includes the construction of a combined heat and power plant, a hydrothermal liquefaction plant, water treatment, sorting facility, tank farm, bulk cargo port and fuel jetty.
Detractors fear, if approved, it will open the province’s gates to garbage from other jurisdictions.
The proposal is in the Environmental Assessment phase with the provincial government, with a final decision from the minister responsible by the end of February.
The deadline for public comment is February 16.
Area residents and others opposed to the proposed development have planned a rally in Lewisporte for Saturday, February 12.
