The lawyer for an inmate who died at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary says the Crown still has a lot of explaining to do.
Bob Buckingham is calling for a public inquiry into the death of 33-year-old Jonathan Henoche in November 2019.
This, after the Crown said it won’t pursue a case against the nine guards, after a judge dismissed charges against them in December.
Instead, the Crown has accepted a second medical opinion that said Henoche could have died due to a previous heart condition made worse by events leading up to his death.
But Buckingham says that’s not accurate, noting prosecutors also left it to the judge to connect the dots in the case.
Buckingham says the Crown has refused requests to appeal the judge’s dismissal of charges against the guards.
Meanwhile, Buckingham is pursuing a civil wrongful death lawsuit against the government in the case.
