The City of St. John’s has been forced to close several roads as it deals with overnight flooding and damage from heavy rain.
Officials issued an advisory just before 9:30 Sunday morning that a section of the Southside Road, heading east toward Blackhead Road, was closed until further notice.
Photos from the area show vehicles partially submerged in several feet of water.
Later, the city advised that until Wednesday a section of Waterford Bridge Road, from Bay Bulls Road to Cowan Avenue, will be closed to make repairs due to flooding. That means the COVID-19 drive-through testing clinic at the Waterford Hospital will only be accessible from the west entrance.
Other areas of the city affected include Portugal Cove Road, from Winter Avenue to Rennies Mill Road, Power’s Road and Syme’s Bridge.
Some homes and backyards have also been flooded by overflowing rivers, particularly along Waterford Bridge Road, Rennies Mill Road and Portugal Cove Road.
Only local traffic is being allowed through those areas where possible and safe to do so.
Drivers are advised to use extreme caution and alternate routes if possible.
The city says roads will reopen as conditions improve.
