A significant amount of rain fell on the island over the weekend, leading to flooding in areas in the capital city.
Over 77 mm was registered at St. John’s International Airport, with totals higher than that further west of the Metro region. Roads in many areas of St. John’s were closed for a time due to flooding.
Meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office Rodney Barney says it’s not just the rain leading to the rise in water levels.
He says there was nearly 20 cm of snow on the ground at the time, and with temperatures hitting 11 degrees, much of that snow melted, leading to a significant rise in water levels.
Fortunately, Barney says temperatures are supposed to dip back down to around freezing, meaning there shouldn’t be much more snow melt.
