The province’s Privacy Commissioner is set to launch its formal investigation into the cyber attack on health care systems in this province back in late October.
The attack created delays and backlogs in certain procedures and accessed the personal information of thousands of health care employees, former employees and patients.
Privacy Commissioner Michael Harvey announced last year that he was conducting an investigation into the incident, separate and independent of official criminal and intelligence investigations being carried out.
Harvey says while he can’t determine the outcome of the investigation before it’s launched, cyber attacks especially on big organizations like health care systems, are not unusual.
He says on its face, there’s nothing to suggest that our province’s system is “inherently flawed,” noting the recent cyber attack on Global Affairs Canada “which you would imagine has some of the strongest protections available”.
