The opposition continues to mount against a proposal to develop a waste-to-energy plant in Lewisporte.
Synergy World Power is proposing to import biomass and plastic waste and turn it into liquid fuel.
Graham Wood, who owns a Lewisporte-based eco-tourism business, says the proposal which is now under environmental assessment has seen two or three other iterations over the years. He says questions remain about the technology Syngery is proposing to convert waste to fuel.
He says the process of gasification and paralysis has not been proven on an industrial level.
Kerri Claire Neil of the Social Justice Cooperative believes the proposal amounts to a garbage-burning facility. Rallies are planned for Saturday, February 12 in Lewisporte and St. John’s opposing the project.
She says the rallies are planned at the Lewisporte Town Hall and at Colonial Building at 11 a.m. on that date.
